Working draft: this biography is based on the relaunch concept. Education, professional milestones, the full list of exhibitions and awards should be confirmed and completed by Brigitte Schwarz.

Brigitte Schwarz is a sculptor and ceramicist. For many years she has worked sculpturally with clay, porcelain and pigments – as well as with feathers, wood, iron, stone, wire, bone, paper and leather. From these materials she creates figures, bowls and shields that do not conceal transience but make it visible.

Artistic themes

At the heart of her work are death, transience and transformation. These themes come together in the image of the phoenix – the bird that burns and rises rejuvenated from the ashes. In the series “Stillness in Presence” (2003) this motif unfolds across 49 works: from mummies and dead earth to goddesses of light and the rising phoenix.

Career and exhibitions

The work of Brigitte Schwarz has been shown internationally, among other places in Denmark and New Zealand. She took part in the renowned ceramics competition the “Fletcher Award”. For many years she kept her studio at the Hardthof in Gießen.

A detailed list of exhibitions and the press coverage can be found on the Exhibitions page.

Zapchen – body-oriented work

Alongside her artistic work, Brigitte Schwarz has for many years been a Zapchen teacher. Zapchen is a body-oriented method that fosters aliveness, inner calm and presence. Her artistic work and this practice share a common thread: body, transformation and presence.

Together with Lorenz Schirmer she offers workshops under the name “Zapchen Wellbeing” – zapchenwellbeing.de.
